When my sister and I were nine and ten, we used to play our guitars and sing folk songs on Sundays at the retirement home where our grandmothers lived. We weren't particularly talented, but our audience wasn't picky, and many of them would clap and sing along with us. However, some residents seemed lost in their own worlds; they were suffering from Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, and didn't hear us at all. Or so we thought.

One day when we finished our songs, I noticed that one of the nurses was wiping tears from her eyes. I asked her what was wrong. She pointed to an elderly lady propped up awkwardly in a chair and said, “Minnie has barely moved as long as I've been here—three years at least. She doesn't talk and doesn't react at all. But when you were singing, she was nodding her head in time to the music and moving her lips. Not a lot, but she was doing it. She was happy! If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't believe it.”
